Renouncing the Rebels: Local and Regional Dimensions of Chad–Sudan Rapprochement reviews the specific circumstances of the recent Chad– Sudan rapprochement and the series of events that took place to bring this extremely divisive six-year conflict to a close. The study focuses specifically on the effects of the rapprochement on the armed opposition movements and the internal crises facing each country.

Creating Facts on the Ground: Conflict Dynamics in Abyei analyses the dynamics of the conflict in Abyei and looks at the implications of these clashes for the Abyei referendum, the demarcation of the territory’s borders, and the North–South peace process more generally. It focuses on the 2011 escalation of the conflict, setting it in the context of historical patterns of violence in the territory.

Although the international community generally holds that the Darfur conflict has experienced profound and propitious improvement since 2010, Forgotten Darfur: Old Tactics and New Players thus argues that, as the conflict enters its ninth year, there is no clear-cut prospect of a decisive end to violent confrontation. Its key findings include the following:

New War, Old Enemies: Conflict Dynamics in South Kordofan describes the first year of renewed war (June 2011– July 2012) based on field research in South Kordofan and South Sudan in February and May 2012. It focuses on the conduct and dynamics of the current conflict and the primary armed actors, identifying shared weapons and ammunition holdings based on detailed accounts of materiel seized, as well as photographs and first-hand physical inspections.

The emergence of a national border into a complex environment containing many groups with different histories and narratives—especially during the second civil war—has deeply affected all of the communities in the region.

At an Impasse: The Conflict in Blue Nile analyses the first two years of the renewed conflict— which took place from September 2011 to June 2013. It is largely based on field research conducted in southern Blue Nile and South Sudan in November and December 2012.

The Sudan Revolutionary Front: Its Formation and Development examines the SRF, its major military campaigns and core political beliefs, and the local and international consequences of the new rebel alliance. The paper is based on interviews with SRF leaders, NCP officials, diplomats, and security sources conducted in Juba, Kampala, Khartoum, and London in 2013.

Contested Borders: Continuing Tensions over the Sudan-South Sudan Border focuses on developments in the border zone between Sudan and South Sudan from July 2013 to September 2014.

Almost a decade after the signing of the Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement (ESPA) there is a need for an independent review of its implementation that takes into account the viewpoints of all stakeholders involved in or affected by the agreement. Development Deferred: Eastern Sudan after the ESPA investigates and analyses the implementation of the ESPA in an attempt to answer key questions: what role has the GoS played in implementing the agreement?

Two Fronts, One War: Evolution of the Two Areas Conflict, 2014–15 analyses the last two years of conflict in the Two Areas, based on fieldwork in late 2014 and early 2015, and significant additional communications and interviews in 2015. It examines the major conflict dynamics during the last dry season of fighting (late 2013–mid-2014) and describes the primary armed actors and their positions to shed light on the major conflict dynamics of the dry season offensive that started in December 2014.
